Short Story

Help make Axanar a reality!  After a massive lawsuit where CBS and Paramount tried to kill the Star Trek that fans have been asking for, and in which we won the right to make 30 minutes more of Axanar, the team moved the studio across the country, finished the amazing bridge set, and are now poised to film the second of 3 film shoots to make Episodes IV and V of The Four Years War, what we collectively call Axanar.

But we can only do it with your help!  We will raise money for each shoot individually, then show you what we have done.  And all along, live stream and report everything we are doing through the Axanar YouTube channel, The Axanar website, the Axanar Facebook page, the Axanar Twitter and the Axanar email newsletter, which you can sign up for here.

Axanar is the Star Trek we all want.

Axanar is a Star Trek that honors canon, believes in the principles that Gene Roddenberry built TOS on and looks like it belongs in the TOS timeline.  It is written with characters you love, and a story you want to hear.

In 2014 we released Prelude to Axanar which won 46 film festival awards, and is roundly hailed as the most amazing Star Trek fan film of all time.

And because of fans like you, we were able to raise over $1.2M between Kickstarter and Indiegogo.  And so we started work on Axanar.  We found a warehouse, converted it to a sound stage, and started building sets!

In 2015 we released the first scene of the full-length Axanar movie, The Vulcan ScenePrinciple photography of the full length feature set to start February 1st, 2016.

But CBS felt that The Vulcan Scene was too good (they told us this and testified to that fact in depositions) and that they couldn’t let it be produced.  So rather than call us and tell us to change it, or send a Cease and Desist letter, on December 30th, 2015 they sued us.  I had been a CBS licensee, helped manage the CBS Star Trek archive and done more than anyone to get fan film guidelines, meeting with top level CBS execs many times.  And they sued me.

How CBS bankrupted Axanar, but couldn’t extinguish the flame!

So CBS and Paramount, two giant Hollywood studios, spent 2016, the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, suing their biggest fans.  Rather than embracing Axanar, they tried to squash it. They were scared, as Axanar was, according to them, as good as what they were doing.  So, unlike Disney, which embraces people who can contribute, CBS and Paramount tried to destroy Axanar.

I was living in Hollywood at the time, and can tell you that every person in the film industry I met thought CBS was being foolish.  “Why don’t they just hire you guys since everyone loves what you’ve done?” was the most common comment.

Thankfully, Axanar creator Alec Peters was able to engage Winston & Strawn, one of the top IP litigation firms in the USA to defend Axanar pro-bono.  Over the 13 months that the lawsuit lasted, Winston & Strawn donated over ONE MILLION DOLLARS in free legal services.  Not one dollar of donor money was spent on the legal defense of Axanar, and Alec personally paid the $26,000 in court costs.

The settlement was a major win for Axanar.  While CBS and Paramount tried to kill Axanar, the settlement basiclaly authorized Axanar, albeit in a shortened version.  But the problem was the lawsuit still bankrupted Axanar.  We couldn’t make anything for over a year during the lawsuit, and we still had to pay the rent and keep the lights on.  And then, to save money and be able to still have a studio, we moved Axanar across the country to Atlanta where costs were about 40% less.  It has been a costly time for Axanar, and Alec personally spent over $200,000 keeping Axanar alive since 2016, paying rent on the studio (which is now partially offset by the generous donors to our Patreon Campaign), finishing the bridge, and paying for perks, like patches and shipping them out.

Axanar Lives!

Based on our settlement with CBS, we get to make two 15 minute episodes, which is perfect to tell the story of the Battle of Axanar.  We took the full length movie script and turned it into two more episodes in The Four Years War documentary.  So fans will get 30 minutes of kick ass Star Trek, the kind of Star trek that we all grew up on.

Plus, we are making a full length audio drama of the full movie script and will release that with an illustrated script.  So fans will get to see and hear, what the full Axanar movie would have been like.

Where we are in production

The way we are doing this is by breaking Axanar up into three distinct “shoots”.  The first happened November 20th, 2021 in Atlanta.  It was a major success with three actors, including JG Hertzler as Admiral Travis, Robert Hayes as Xander Deville and Raj Kalla as Commodore Singh.

This will be the second shoot and then there will be a three day Los Angeles shoot where we will shoot Alien makeup (Klingons, Vulcans, Andorians) as well as 3 human characters.    Finally, we will have a one day location shoot in Los Angeles at Starfleet HQ which will be where we have all donors who donated to be extras, as well as production assistants and producers.

Axanar is so popular that it has its own parody! Mark Largent’s epic “Prelude to Ax’ed We Are!”

With almost 15,000 Axanar and Star Trek fans on our mailing list, we feel we can raise what we need to make the next two episodes of Axanar and bring the Star Trek we want to fans everywhere.
